The two most powerful warriors are patience and time. Some anime creators, however, fail to understand what it means.
Arifureta: From Commonplace to World's Strongest is a Japanese light novel series, which is written by Ryo Shirakome (his first work) and illustrated by Takayaki. The novels are licensed in English by J-Novel Club, with Seven Seas Entertainment publishing them in print. An anime television series adaptation by White Fox and Asread premiered on July 8, 2019. The final episode aired on October 7, 2019 and concluded 13 episodes series.
Hajime Nagumo and his entire high school class are summoned to a fantasy world to save the humanity. While his classmates are gifted with impressive abilities useful in combat, Hajime has hardly anything to boast about; his skills are nothing but average. Hajime, just like in his world, has to struggle to gain the needed power to save the mankind: he needs to clear an entire dungeon, which is considered the deadliest, no human has ever cleared.
It is quite a challenge to assess Arifureta unbiased and I have been trying for some time to find something good about it, all in vain. The moment Arifureta starts, it already fails in many ways. It feels like the show tries to skip every important detail and focus on something that is absolutely not needed. Hajime explores a dungeon with a group of people and they are not just some random heroes he knows nothing about it, but the series just decides to skip the important world-building and throws Hajime in the depth of the dungeon. Fine. At least, the show explains Hajime's power and does not make him overpowered, the moment he is summoned to another world.
And do not get me wrong, while I do call them 'flaws' they are actually not. The show skips unneeded development, Hajime is thrown in the depth of a dungeon, no human has ever been able to clear. He has to fight for his life and discover many secrets about the world he is summoned to. The hype should have never ended. But something went wrong. While the show does have a very dark start, some really good start, it fails after a couple of episodes greatly. From something dark it becomes... well, bunny girls. Why would they do that sudden shift in the series' tone? I still cannot answer this question. And if you think that the series might focus more on the world-building and characters and explain a thing, or two about the series, spoiler: it will not. P.S. And if you think bunny girls is a 'black spot' for any anime, watch Rokka no Yuusha.
Animation wise, let us just say that the series adaptation was supposed to air over a year ago, in April 2018, but was reportedly pulled because the original creator was dissatisfied with it; the core staff was almost entirely replaced, as well as their work they had done. Do not get me wrong, it is not that bad, but there are some flaws that you will notice, if you are attentive enough.
Character wise, the whole cast is just so dull that I cannot name even one good thing about them. Hajime Nagumo does start as a no-life otaku, in a new world, where he is a loser, too. Betrayed, he changes a lot and he is not that whiny brat anymore and that is pretty much it. He becomes a new person and shows little to no development; his inner dialogues are just awfully bad. Hajime is not the only main protagonist in the series, but they all are similar in a way, they lack uniqueness. They all are just your average isekai characters, in your average isekai harem.
Enjoyment wise, Arifureta Shokugyou de Sekai Saikyou does have an enjoyable start, which gives you a hope that Hajime Nagumo is going to become a new, interesting protagonist that has his ideals, desires. Yet, the whole series screams 'averageness' and it will not change even after the 13th episode. Arifureta: From Commonplace to World's Strongest could have been a pretty good ecchi, or hentai, but for something serious you need a better story-line, world building, as well as character development.
All in all, I failed to find anything enjoyable about Arifureta, thus I cannot recommend you this atrocity.
10/100.
